I REALIZE THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HAMTON NH IN GENERAL AND YET IT APPLIES EVERYWHERE I GUESS Why is it that when bosses complain about poor performers, they're never talking about themselves?
Too often, managers attribute all their woes to their lackluster underlings or the mistreatment they receive from their own supervisors. Many are unwilling or unable to even consider the possibility that they themselves might just be the problems that plague morale and performance. Managers with this type of attitude contribute to an illness that undermines many businesses Â bad boss syndrome, or BBS.
BBS is a two-way street that can infect a business at every level: It can affect employees who are burdened by unappreciative managers who stifle their creativity and hamper their growth within the company. And it can also refer to the manager who's a terrible boss.
Unappreciative bosses are the pits. They often believe that if you do the job you were hired for, then you aren't entitled to praise or gratitude from them. It would never occur to them to say thanks or show their appreciation for your efforts. After all, you get a paycheck for that, so why should you deserve more?
I agree that employees shouldn't expect back-patting 24/7, but I strongly disagree with the philosophy of managers who don't offer frequent feedback and praise. Study after study confirms that workers are more committed to their jobs and are more productive when they know that management appreciates their efforts. In fact, the majority of people quit their bosses, not their jobs, when they opt to leave their positions.
Employees Should Communicate Their Needs
While the onus shouldn't be on the individual to beg for praise, as an employee you can try to retrain your boss to deliver the positive reinforcement you seek. For example, explain that such communication motivates you to deliver your very best work. Ask directly for constructive feedback, not just critical reaction, to your efforts. Ask directly for feedback on what you're doing right.
As a manager, ask yourself if you treat your direct reports the same way you expect your manager to treat you.
Recognize good work. When your people put in long hours or contribute great ideas, acknowledge them. This can come in many forms Â verbal credit in front of the group, an e-mail thanking an employee for a job well done, and even a spot bonus that says, "We really appreciate you."
The most basic form of appreciation is perhaps the easiest: Say "thank you." Those two words aren't spoken enough around the office. Managers are quick to complain when something goes wrong, but at the end of the day they're not willing to say thanks for putting in an honest day's work. Try it. Saying thank you Â and meaning it Â pays dividends in any workplace.

I have been out and about this last week so I haven't had a chance to update the site. Above is a picture of the Conway Scenic Railroad as it winds through a gorge and over an old wooden tressle. This is definately something to try when you have the time to do so.

I said the other day I was going too a secret place in Rowley. I did not get there this week. I got distracted by the thought of a big breakfast. For that I chose Nancy's right across the street from AMD Subaru on route one in Rye. I used the cow pictures because everything in Nancy's is cow related. Pictures, curtains, wallpaper, COWS! They have a large breakfast menu with several daily specials as well as an early bird special. The one that keeps bringing me back is her "roast beef has and eggs" It's home made and fantastic! They also have soups and sanwiches for lunch but feature breakfast all day. there are two dining rooms one in front and the other in the rear with a breakfast bar with plenty of room. Give it a try!

WILDCAT SKI AREA OPEN? FROM HAMPTON NH

This is Crazy! The earliest opening at Wildcat ski area in 50 years! They opened yesterday with about four feet of snow on all the trails! This must be like Christmas for all You snow lovers. For me it's like a cruel reminder that we have six months of this cold stuff. Wildcat is located in Pinkham Notch NH just head up route 16 through North Conway.

Well most people are still thinking about Halloween not playing in the snow. Don't forget to turn your clocks back before you go to bed tonight.

I was told about a restaurant in Rowley Ma that I'm going to check out on Monday It's suppose to be a hidden jewel I'll let you know.

The Old Salt Restaurant had it's annual Halloween party yesterday. We went over early for the early bird specials. They seemed to have quite a good turn out for the kids.

Well we're getting close to Halloween so I thought I'd put in some basic safety tips early. So here are some good ideas to keep in mind.

Know the route your kids will be taking if you aren't going with them.

The best bet is to make sure that an adult is going with them. If you can't take them, see if another parent or a teen aged sibling can go along.

Know what other activities a child may be attending, such as parties, school or mall functions.
Make sure you set a time that they should be home by. Make sure they know how important it is for them to be home on time.

Explain to children the difference between tricks and vandalism. Throwing eggs at a house may seem like fun but they need to know the other side of the coin as well, clean up and damages can ruin Halloween. If they are caught vandalizing, make them clean up the mess they've made.
Explain to your kids that animal cruelty is not acceptable. Kids may know this on their own but peer pressure can be a bad thing. Make sure that they know that harming animals is not only morally wrong but punishable by law and will not be tolerated.

Sometimes adults need more watching at their partys! If you have an adult party make sure to keep an eye on the drinking.

Something none of us want to here is higher utility costs but that's exactly what Unitil and the other companies are telling us. When the current contract is up in January we will be digging deeper to pay those bills. I heat with natural gas and can expect a 50% increase over last year.

The rain continues maybe some sunshine this weekend. Check out the Independant film festivals weekend schedule of events for some good in door activities. Also there are a few good films out now and more coming this weekend check your local listings. I still haven't seen "FLIGHTPLAN" with Jodie Foster. I think I'll do that on Monday when it's a little quieter at the movies.

Where is the foliage? Although it is coming in up north here in the Seacoast area the trees still think it's summer! The warm days which lasted right through last week fooled them. Now that we have had all this cool weather and rain we should start to see a little more color in the next couple weeks. That is if we don't get another strong storm that knocks all the leaves off the trees! Above is a picture of Keene NH in better times. The flooding of this week and the threat of more on the way Has got to be hard on the residents of the South West corner of our state. I hope they still hold their annual pumpkin contest. By the way if you would like to donate to the relief fund contact the American Red Cross. Make sure you specify where you want the money to go.

TOPSFIELD FAIR FROM HAMPTON NH

The Topsfield Faire is underway on Route one in Topsfield Ma. The Fair will run through October 10th. Thsi is the oldest Agricultural Fair in the country. You'll find plenty of animals, rides, demonstrations and of course junk food! The Fair is open daily at 10:00am. The traffic can be pretty heavy so I would suggest going in the morning if possible.

There are many reasons I'm glad to be in New Hampshire. The lack of crime and corruption is part of that reason. As bad as we all feel for the people of the Gulf coast region I can't help adding this article from the New York Times to the site today as food for thought. So here it is.

The New York Daily News, Sept. 4, 2005 Louisiana .... (Excerpted)

In the late 1990s, the state's school systems ranked dead last in
the nation in the number of computers per student (1 per 88), and
Louisiana has the nation's second-highest percentage of adults
who never finished high school. By the state's own measure, 47%
of the public schools in New Orleans rank as "academically
unacceptable."

These government failures are not merely a matter of incompetence.
Louisiana and New Orleans have a long, well-known reputation for
corruption: as former congressman Billy Tauzin once put it, "half
of Louisiana is under water and the other half is under indictment."

That's putting it mildly. Adjusted for population size, the state ranks
third in the number of elected officials convicted of crimes
(Mississippi is No. 1). Recent scandals include the conviction of 14
state judges and an FBI raid on the business and personal files of
a Louisiana congressman.

In 1991, a notoriously corrupt Democrat named Edwin Edwards ran
for governor against Republican David Duke, a former head of the Ku
Klux Klan. Edwards, whose winning campaign included bumper
stickers saying "Elect the Crook," is currently serving a 10-year
prison sentence for taking bribes from casino owners. Duke recently
completed his own prison term for tax fraud.

The rot included the New Orleans Police Department, which in the 1990s had the dubious distinction of being the nation's most corrupt
police force and the least effective: the city had the highest murder
rate in America. More than 50 officers were eventually convicted of
crimes including murder, rape and robbery; two are currently on
Death Row.

Ten billion dollars are about to pass into the sticky hands of
politicians in the No. 1 and No. 3 most corrupt states in America.

DEERFIELD FAIR BEGINS TODAY FROM HAMPTON NH

"The Sport of Horsepulling"
In the early 1900's when farmers farmed with horses, can't you just visualize a farmer telling his neighbor. "I bet my horse can pull more than yours can". Then to prove it, the neighbor would take him up on that bet and soon there would be some competition between several farmers.
Horsepulling has come quite far from the early 1900's. Although the Amish use horses to do their field work, those horses who labor on the farm for many hours a day usually don't end up in the Pulling Arena on the week-end. The few farmers that use their pulling stock to haul manure, mow hay or cut hay, do not do this on a consistent basis.
So, the Sport of Horsepulling is exactly THAT. It is a sport with a team of equine athletes. The work that goes into them to get ready for competition is endless.

You'll see plenty of horsepulling at the Deerfield Fair today through October 2nd.

I believe the Deerfield Fair to be the closet we have in this area to a real old fashioned New England fair. The weather might not be the greatest for today but give it a try. Your suppose to get wet and muddy at fair anyway.

SEPTEMBER 29-OCTOBER 2 - The 129th version of “New England’s Oldest ‘Family Fair’®” opens on September 29th at the Deerfield Fairgrounds in Deerfield, NH. The fair offers four full days of events, starting with the first of several all-breed horse shows at 9:00am on September 29th. Throughout the day, fairgoers can enjoy everything from pig scrambles to a woodsmen contest to country music’s Tammy Jackson and her band performing at 7:00pm. It seems like it was just a few weeks ago we were worried about Hampton Beach being able to open for Memorial day due to the string of storms that took their tool on the beaches. Now we are just a couple of days away from fall. Fall foliage season is only a couple of weeks away. This week we still see summer weather so we better get out and enjoy it. Let's hope the rain over last weekend and the rain we are expecting today will give a boost to the trees in order for a spectacular foliage season.

RACE WEEKEND AT LOUDON FROM HAMPTON NH

It's race weekend at Loudon. Will the weather hold out? Sunday looks like the best bet for that. The Sunday Nextel event has been sold out since last August but you could still get tickets for Saturday. Here is the scedule.

The Craftsman Trucks qualify Saturday at 10 a.m. and race in the Sylvania 200 at 3:15 p.m. Nextel Cup qualifying is Saturday at 12:10 p.m. Both will be televised on the Speed Channel.
Sunday’s Nextel Cup Sylvania 300 takes the green flag at 1:10 p.m. It will be televised on TNT. There are tickets available for Saturday. Call 783-4931.

UFO'S IN NH? FROM HAMPTON NH

This may seem like an odd subject for this site however there have been hundreds of sightings of ufo's in the seacoast area over the past 40 years or so. So many that there was a movie made about the experiences of Betty and Barney Hill after being abducted while traveling home to Portsmouth from the White Mountains. Also a book can be found in any library called "Incident At Exeter" A sighting that took place in the area in 1965 that lasted about 30 minutes and was witnessed by law enforcement, students ant Phillip's Exeter and many area residents. I recall when I was working as a D.J. at a Portsmouth NH radio station on a Saturday night in 1973. It was a slow phone night, not many requests. Then the phones started to light up one line at a time until all ten were lit. I started answering the calls and everyone of them was from Amesbury Ma and all describing the same thing. A large disc with lights hovering over a farm field in Amesbury. One woman was in a house not even a hundred yards from it. She said cars were stopping and just watching this thing. After about 10 minutes of these calls a heard the roar of jets from Pease Airforce Base. I looked out the studio window and saw three fighters with after burners on heading towards Amesbury. At that moment the man I was speaking with said the UFO moved away quickly and seconds later the jets flew by. There was never any official statement but when is there? PARKER RIVER WILDLIFE REFUGE FROM HAMPTON NH

Parker River National Wildlife Refuge is located approximately 32 miles northeast of Boston on Plum Island. Plum Island is a natural barrier island stretching along the Massachusetts Atlantic coast between the mouth of the Merrimack River to the north and the mouth of the Ipswich River to the south.
The Refuge occupies the southern three-fourths of the island and is 4,662 acres in size. Included within this space are 6.5 miles of sandy beach, approximately 3,000 acres of salt marsh, three managed fresh water impoundments, and one of the few unspoiled dune-beach complexes still existing in the Northeast.
The Refuge is accessible by motor vehicle and foot over mostly gentle terrain. Several miles of foot trails meander through dune, shrub/thicket, freshwater marsh, and other Refuge habitats. Observation towers and platforms afford commanding views of the Refuge and surrounding lands and waters. A 6.3 mile (10.1 km) roadway runs the length of the Refuge and provides several pulloffs. For your safety, roadside parking is prohibited and the 25 MPH (40 kmph) speed limit is strictly enforced.

The 130th Rochester Fair is coming up on September 19th and runs through september 25th. This is one of the oldest fairs in the country. As well as the usual food animals and rides they also have auto, motorcycle and harness racing.

We went to the fire works at Hampton Beach last night and were surprised at the quality of the them. Well Labor Day Weekend is over and people are heading home. Here is some good news the oil companies are ashamed of the prices and will be rolling them back! THIS COMES FROM A RELIABLE SOURCE so expect to see prices under 3.00 shortly.

The pumpkins above are just a reminder of whats in store in th next few weeks. What a beautiful fall day it was today and let's hope we have many more. The Seafood festival is next week and I suggest just going to your favorite restauarant and avoid this rip off all together! They have the nerve to be charging a 6.00 donation to get in and then everything you buy is at least 5.00. Good things always get spoiled especially when certain people are involved!

Labor day weekend is here! So let's all get to Hampton Beach one more time before the Seafood Festival. I really don't think the gas prices will effect this weekend because everyone has already made plans. Remember you can go to www.gasbuddy.com to get the lowest prices in your area but I think prices are changing to quickly right now for them to be accurate. The station closet to me was 2.79 when I went to work on Friday and when I can home was 3.09.

Lots going on at Hampton beach this weekend. Two fireworks shows one Saturday and one on Sunday. They should be good ones being the last of the official summer.

A couple cautions for you:

Police might be setting up road blocks to check for impaired drivers.
Watch your children and yourself with the rip tide, Know how to get out of it.
And Please watch out for motorcycles there will be even more then usual both this weekend and next.

It's almost time again for the annual Seafood Festival at Hampton Beach. This year (2005) the dates are (9/9-9/11. Each of the tents in the photo above contains different seacaost area vendors selling their special types of seafood so bring your appetite. There will be live music, entertaintment and some cooking tips from the Chefs. Don't think about driving to the beach. Come to downtown hampton and you'll find plenty of bus transportation free all day to and from the festival.

ROBERT FROST'S FARM FROM HAMPTON NH

Rain is in the forecast for today so how about a trip to the Robert Frost Farm in Derry. It's about an hour ride you'll need to check mapquest for directions but if you stay on the back roads you'll pass by many vegetable stands and it's a nice ride.

Robert Frost was born on March 26, 1874 in San Francisco. After his father died when Robert was 11, his family moved to Lawrence, Massachusetts where his father's family lived. At Lawrence High School, Robert began to write poetry. In his senior year, Frost met Elinor Miriam White, with whom he shared an interest in reading and writing poetry. Frost entered Dartmouth in the fall of 1892, and although he stayed for less than one semester, it was there that Robert Frost began to think of becoming a poet.

On November 8, 1894, he sold one of his poems, "My Butterfly: An Elegy" to a magazine and saw it published in the Independent. This was the first appearance of Frost's poetry in a publication with national circulation.

In December of 1895, Robert Frost and Elinor Miriam White were married in Lawrence, MA. The couple began to raise a family - a son, Elliott was born in 1896 and a daughter, Lesley in 1899. Frost also attended Harvard College as a special student, continued to write poetry, and occasionally saw his work published.In 1900, Frost's paternal grandfather, worried by Robert's apparent lack of ambition, bought a farm in Derry, N.H. for Robert's use. In the fall of 1900, Robert and Elinor moved into their home with Lesley; Elliott had died earlier that year at the age of four.

The farm was completely isolated. For Robert Frost, who especially enjoyed the seclusion, the farm was an ideal setting to raise his family and continue to write poetry in private. Though the farm and its surroundings were the inspiration for much of what Frost wrote, it was his poetry, not the farming, that was his primary concern.

The Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion is the former home of New Hampshire's first royal governor, Benning Wentworth, who served in office from 1741 to 1767. The rambling, 40-room mansion which overlooks Little Harbor, is one of the most outstanding homes remaining of the colonial era. Its stateliness and impressive interior and furnishings reflect aristocratic life in Portsmouth in the 1700s.The Mansion reflects five distinct periods of architecture. The extraordinary skill of New Hampshire's eighteenth century craftsmen is exhibited in the intricate hand-carved mantelpiece. The council chamber and the spy closet reveal details about daily life and government during the colonial period. Purple lilacs, descendants of the first European stock imported by Wentworth, decorate the grounds.Tours of the Mansion are conducted on the hour. In an effort to avoid a repeat of the tragedy of the fourth of July weekend and alot of close calls this summer. The NH Parks and Recreation Dept has come up with these signs which you will now see at the beach. The idea is to let people know there is a real risk associated with these currents and give instructions on what to do if you should find yourself caught in one. Click the chart above to enlarge it. They will be in three languages French, Spanish and English. Please make sure to read and understand them and go over them with your kid's as well. There have always been rip tides at Hampton Beach but not as severe as this year do to the Spring storms that changed the ocean bottom dramatically so be aware.

"The Hampton Beach Idol Competition" will take place this Saturday and Sunday. Come watch talented entertainers compete for cash prizes. 1st $500, 2nd $300, 3rd $200 Limited to Vocalist in one of two categories. CASTLE SPRING'S TOURS AT CASTLE IN THE CLOUDS FROM HAMPTON NH

I get so many requests for information on castle in the clouds in Moultonbourogh and the tours at the Castlehill water and brewing company that I'm adding a little more information about it. The other high request is for "Canopy Lake". For this request I'm just adding a spelling lesson It's "Canobie Lake". And Salisbury Beach is in MA not NH and Hampton Beach is in NH not MA. And I don't care what the water temperature is! It's cold all the time. In August it's usually in the Mid 60's.

Castle in the Clouds is located in Moultonborough, New Hampshire. It was built by the eccentric millionaire Thomas Plant. It is now part of the 5500 acre Castle Springs estate which is the location of the Castle Springs water bottling plant. Tours of the plant and the castle are available.
This is a wonderful day trip for the whole family. give them a call for specific directions but it's about an hour and a half drive and there are a couple of different ways to go one way takes you through beautiful Wolfboro NH the oldest summer resort in America. Plan on spending a couple of hours at the castle there is a lot to explore. Plus they have a brewery on site as well as a tour of the Castle bottled water plant. The first photo above shows Seabrook Harbor looking W/SW you can see many fishing and pleasure boats. The 2nd picture is of the Yankee fisherman's coop where the fisherman will sell their catch of the at regulated prices. It's not very busy right now because this picture was taken at about 8:am. The bottom of the photo is looking straight across the harbor between the other two photos. In the background is the Yankee Nuclear power plant (another natural beauty).

There are many public beaches in Seabrook starting at the bridge and continuing all the way to Salisbury beach. Many of these beaches do not have lifeguards so I would suggest them for pure sunbathers or anyone wishing to take a long walk along the shore.

EXETER RECREATION COMPLEX FROM HAMPTON NH

I have mentioned the recreation complex before but I did not have any photos at that time. This will give you a better idea of whats going on over there. I wish there were things like this to climb on when I was a kid. The Exeter Recreation Complex is located on route 27 in Exeter and is open to none residents. You can swim for just four dollars for non residents. Not bad! And remember they have tennis courts, baseball and softball fields as well so go enjoy some inexpensive fun while your here. Not everything costs $25.00 to have fun!

Once again route one was backed up last night with people trying to save a dollar at the toll. I hate to see what Labor Day is going to bring for traffic back up. You'd think gas was .25 a gallon.

I am glad to see people are not stopping what they want to just because of the prices.

Speaking of gas prices, I found a new web site called www.gasbuddy.com that will tell you where the cheapest gas is anywhere in the U.S. According to them in Hampton it's the new Hess station on route one.

It's Sunday once again. If your heading home today you might want to stop at Salisbury food for plenty of junk food and some rides. The photos above are of the center of Salisbury Beach where it all happens. Ther is plenty of parking and entertainment for the the whole family. Don't pass by the the beach pizza. You decide which is better Tripoli's or Christy's.

BARKER'S FARM FROM HAMPTON NH

It's Saturday and time to get back to the search for local vegetables. This is one of my favorites. "Barkers Farm" in Stratham NH. It's located on route 33 and is about 20 minutes from downtown Hampton. You can see on the sign some of the main vegetables they have. You'll find more than that. Everthing is picked daily and if they run out of something they just go in the back room and get some more. Their back room is the garden out back. Someone is always coming in from the field with fresh something. To get to the farm from downtown Hampton head north on route one. As soon as you go over the little bridge take a left this is Post Road. Follow Post road all the way to route 33 about 7 to 8 miles. Take a left on 33 and Barker's will be on your left about 5 miles or so you can't miis it.

I'm getting off the trail of fresh vegetables for today. After all it is still beach weather and some people like lobsters! For that I bring you two Seabrook land marks located on opposite sides of route 286 just off route 1A. Dueling Lobster Restaurants Brown's and Markey's. On any given day you'll both restaurants packed with people that have just one thing in mind, Lobsters! Which one of these restaurants is the best? I have no idea. They both get their Lobsters from the same place and most likely cook them the same way and would have to be comparable in price since they are across the street from each other so you'll just have to try both. I would imagine it's similar to the Tripoli's or Christy's pizza choice at Salisbury beach. Same pizza, same price, right next to each other but people have to take a stand between the two. Me? I'm Tripoli's all the way!

CIDER HILL FARM FROM HAMPTON NH

Fresh vegetable season is here and in my never ending search for places to find them I find myself at Cider Hill Farm in Amesbury MA on route 108. Cider Hill is a bit different. A little more upscale and varies in it's offerings from most local farm stands. They of course have vegetables but also crafts and gifts in the big barn which would be to the right of the photos above.

Soon it will be apple and pumkin season that's when this place really comes alive. They offer apple picking at that time and it's a great way to get the kid's out in the field and see where apples come from and how a working farm operates.

From Hampton head down route one to Seabrook and take a right towards I-95. Keep going past the dog track and until you come to a stop sign. Take a left this is route 108, go about 4 miles down and you will see Cider Hill Farm on your left.

THE U.S.S. HAMPTON FROM HAMPTON NH

The U.S.S Hampton is named in honor of the cities in Virginia, South Carolina, Iowa and New Hampshire, and is the fourth ship to carry this name. The first was a tug. The second was a subchaser (PCS 1368) named after the town in South Carolina. The third was an amphibious transport (APA 115), named after the county in South Carolina. All three ships served in World War II. The photo above shows the nuclear sub on the surface at the North pole. What a change in the weather. We really needed the rain yesterday and today feels like September. It's going to be a little cool to start today but temperatures should bounce back to the 70's.

By the way if you haven't noticed the Atlantic Grill is gone and in it's place is Hagan's Grill. I stopped by the other night to see what they did. The bar has been expanded, new tables and stools and it's tastefully decorated. We didn't have a lot of time so we just got the Shrimp Cocktail and Nachos. The menu is limited probably because of the size of the kitchen. I think the whole operation has a more professional feel now. Still only the one Fryolator, so if your allergic to fish be carefull with anything fried. Stop in and see for yourself.

Margarita is from Medellin Columbia. This area is well known for their proper annunciation and clarity of the language. Plus the music is great! Here is something you can do. Visit John Greenleaf Whittier's birth place on route 110 in Haverhill. Ma. It's only about twenty minutes on the back roads. Whittier is considered a national treasure. His Quaker type poetry is known far and wide. He was a staunch abolitionist and activist. My favorite Whittier poem is "Snowbound". You can read a lot more about him either on line or stop by the Lane Memorial Library. Better still visit his Birthplace!

Was it hot enough for you yesterday? They way it feels outside right now at 5:05 am doesn't feel much better.

Just a note, don't get trapped in the route one escape route if your heading south this afternoon. It seems this year everyone is trying to save that $1.00 toll and spending $10.00 in gas stopped in traffic. Route 95 is still your best bet to get home no matter how bad it looks.

I was sitting on the deck at the Old Salt Restaurant the other night enjoying perfectly broiled New York Sirloin when I heard these tourist (probably from the mid west) complaining about all the motorcycle traffic in this area and how they are always in the way! They didn't understand why it is this way. By the way they said they will never come back! So some good news came out of it. Simple answer to their question. First of all you have one of the top 10 Harley-Davidson dealers in the U.S. in North Hampton. Besides the regular customers they bring in on a daily basis special events are always taking place there. Most of the events are of benenfit to the community. The Blood drive, Ride for NHSPCA and other charities, Children's day, Octoberfest with free food for all. That's one reason. There are also the Triumph/Ducati and Honda Kawasaki stores to consider as well as the BMW dealer. On top of this everyone wants to go to the beach on a nice day! And with the great back roads and coastal route we have here it all adds up to a lot of bikes and with dozens of new bikes being sold just by our local dealers every week don't expect to see fewer bikes in the future.

Just be careful and watch out for them. And for the bikers KEEP THE NOISE DOWN!

STRAWBERRY BANKE FROM HAMPTON NH

More hot weather today! How about a trip to Portsmouth's Puddle Dock district where you can roam the historical grounds of Strawberry Banke. Strawberry Banke got it's name from the first settlers back in the 1600's. They chose the name because of all the berrys lining the banks of the Piscataqua River. Pictured above is the General Store where you'll find a myriad of items for sale relating to the history of the area. The working museum entrance is just to the left of this picture. You can stroll through the courtyards and maybe find Mrs. Goodwin sitting on her porch describing what life "IS" like in the early days. Tour all the houses along with knowlegable guides that will bring you back to yesteryear. Visit a tavern of old (no pints however). Famous visitors to this area include George Washington, Daniel Webster, John Paul Jones as well as many others. Many of the buildings at Strawberry Banke have been moved to this location for preservation purposes. I strongly recommend this for your things to do list. A tour through this timeline can really help you put things in perspective and just for minute or two maybe relieve some of the stress of today's problems. It's like "Taking a vacation from your vacation" !!

Every once and I while I stumble across something that was right in front of me. Such was the case last evening. My wife wanted to go for a swim so I started looking for places to go. After a call to the Exeter Parks and Recreation Dept we headed over to Exeter on Route 27 which is the corner The Old Salt sits on in the center of Hampton. When we got there (about 5 miles on the right) we were totally surprised! They have a beautiful pool with slides and lifeguard on duty at all times. They have perfectly maintained tennis courts, at least four, baseball and softball fields and more. None resident swimming is only $4.00 for adults and $2.00 for children. So if you want to beat the heat head on over. Swimming is from 1:00-4:45 and 6p-7:45p.

TWIN LANTERNS FROM HAMPTON NH

Another Hot, Humid week. Here is an idea. How about getting away from the Beach crowds and expensive lunch prices and head over to the "TWIN LANTERNS" on route 108 I'm not sure if it's in South Hampton or Kennsington but it's easy to get too. Just head down route one about 5 miles from Hampton. When you get to the Seabrook turn off to pick up 95 just take a right and keep going straight . don't get on the highway. You'll pass the Seabrook Dog Track. Keep going until you come to a stop sign. This is 108. Take a left and you'll find the Twin Lantern on the right a couple miles down. Why am I sending down here? Because you'll find Giant ice cream cones 70's pricing, unbelievable tuna and lobster roles, french fries and a green pepper burger that you'll just fall in love with. This is just a partial look at the menu. My wife and I stopped there last week, got two large tuna rolls, fries and a drink and the bill was under $9.00 I think it was like $8.65. I handed the girl a twenty and the change she gave me made me question her. I didn't think she charged me enough! So give it a try it's only 15 minutes from Hampton. Also they have some tables under the trees so you can eat outside. This place has the feel of Old New England before McDonalds and Burger King. Anyone over forty will remember going to a place like this when they were young. It brings back some found memories.

Well shall we check the weather? And by the way I do not do water temperatures because they are very innacurate. Depnding on tides, storms etc. Just figure IT'S COLD, usually running about mid to upper 60's on average this time of year. Just go put your foot in the water that's the only way to see if it's right for you! If the water temp was 68 and the air temp is 65 it's going to feel warm. If the air temp is 90 and the water is 68 it's going to feel cold. So if you want warm beach water go on a cold day!

The Lane Memorial Library is located on Winnacunnet Rd in Hampton and has many activities going on including Children's programs during the week. Next time you drive by stop in and look around you'll all the kinds of things that might surprise for a small Library. They have computer access and of course a very friendly staff and lots of volunteers. With all the access to information we have today we sometimes forget how nice it can be to just walk around a library in peace and quiet . Suddenly you spot that book you've been meaning to read and just grab a comfortable chair and next thing you know your late for something. But it was worth it, wasn't it!

GEORGE WASHINGTON'S VISIT TO HAMPTON FALLS NH

Click on the photo so you can read the sign about George Washington's visit to Hampton Falls on his way up route one to Portsmouth. Route one was the main route to New Hampshire right from the start it has seen a lot of famous people over the years. Thomas Edison frequently traveled too Portsmouth to see his friend Frank Jones of Frank Jones brewery. The list would be a mile long. Any way, above is the common in Hampton Falls besides the display of cannons there is a very nice Gazebo or bandstand which does get occasional use during the summer featuring local bands. Check it out it's right on route one at the lights. Then take a right on route 88 and head out to Applecrest where you can get some apples obviously but also chicken pies. In the fall Applecrest has all kinds of activities on the weekends. Hayrides, music, apple picking. Right now you can pick blueberry's.

Everyone should have their own buffalo but if you don't have the room just head down too Tendercrop farm in Newbury Ma on route 1A.

One of my favorite things to do this time of year is go in search of local produce on the back roads. Between Hampton and Stratham you will still find " THE HONOR SYSTEM " vegetable stands where they have a money box and you take what you want and make your own change! Then you'll find the farm stands that of course have a lot more to choose from. It's such a short season around here for locally grown vegetables you really have to take advantage of it while you can. As far as a regular store that has everything I recommend The Golden Harvest in Kittery ME.

It's going to be a beautiful day for "Children's Day" at Seacoast Harley-Davidson so get there early!

The two pictures above are of the first Baptist Church in Hampton Falls. The reason I split it into two pictures is so you can see the top of the steeple. Whets That! A beer bottle? Well there are a couple different versions of the story of why it's up there but this is the one I like. Frank Jones use to be the big brewing company in Portsmouth and the story goes that the church approached him for money to finish the steeple. He agreed but insisted that there be a beer bottle placed at the very top. If you would like to see it for yourself just head down route one to Hampton Falls and the Church will be on the right side when you get to the lights.

What do two of the hottest brands in the world have in common? Both will provide hours of fun for the whole family at Seacoast Harley-Davidson during the 2nd annual Children's Day this Saturday August 6th from 8:30- 5pm. The dealership will celebrate the release of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince with Harry Potter games, prizes and entertainment free for all muggles and wizards.

Last years event was a big success and they expect this year to be even bigger so get the Harry potter costumes and head to Seacoast Harley-Davidson this Saturday!

The gardens at Prescott Park are spectacular at this time and just get better right into September. Definitely worth the trip to Portsmouth. This is also the place for nightly entertainment. Situated on the banks of the Piscataqua River across from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard it's the perfect place to relax. Strawberry Banke Museum is right across the street. You are in within walking distance of all of Portsmouths fine restaurants and Market square. Take a ride up there today because weekends can be quite busy.

Another hot and humid day is predicted for today. I drove by North Beach yesterday and you would think it was Labor Day weekend with the amount of traffic and people. Doesn't any one work anymore?

Anyway if you drive out Towle Farm road You will find the "James House" a restoration work in progress.

The James House is recognized as a true "first period" colonial. The house built for Benjamin James in 1723, near the salt meadows of Hampton, New Hampshire, is regarded as perhaps the earliest surviving example of the two-room deep, center-chimney colonial in New Hampshire. All of its original framing remains intact.
Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002, the James House presents an important opportunity to preserve the architectural and historic value of a rare first period house.

The heat wave returns today! What you need to do is print this picture and carry it with you. When you can't see the mistakes it's time to get out of the heat.

One way to do this is a tour of the Redhook Brewery at the Pease International Tradeport in Portsmouth. They offer daily tours for only $1.00 you'll see how the beer is made and get to taste many of the different beers they make there. They also have a nice restaurant on location with a good menu and of course a bar that serves all of the Rehook products. Children with adults are welcome as well.

To get to the Tradeport just head all the up route one to the traffic circle in Portsmouth and head towards route 16 You will see the signs and the brewery from there.

Today is the last day of the Stratham Fair on route 33 in Stratham NH that's about a 15 minute ride from Hampton. So there is still time to get over there and see a real old fashion country fair. You'll find many demonstrations by the 4-H club, arts and crafts amusements and yes of course plenty of junk food so head on over and have some fun!

The Blue lobster above is under the care of the Rhode Island Audubon Society. It was caught about two years ago. This year when it shed it became extremely Blue!

FRANKLIN CAUSES RIP TIDE CONCERNS AT HAMPTON BEACH NH

Rip tides

Although tropical depression "Franklin" is more than three hundred miles off our coast the National weather service is predicting some huge surf and strong rip tides and undertow. New Hampshire beaches have been plagued all season with serious rip tides caused by the change in the ocean floor due to the severe Nor'easters we had this spring.

For the surfers the breakers could be up to 10 to 12 feet.

For everyone else remember, stay close to shore, watch the kids and LISTEN to the lifeguards! And if there are no lifeguards where you are do not go in the water. We do not want a repeat of the 4th of July tragedy. Use your common sense.

I didn't think those thunderstorms last evening were ever going to end! Luckily in Hampton we did not get the winds that other areas got however the lightning was relentless! I'm sure the Hampton Fire Department was very busy. I heard them running around town.

Another indoor activity is right down Route One in Seabrook New hampshire.

Seabrook Greyhound Park was built in 1973 and opened in 90 days; from the moment the first bulldozer set its treads on the plot of land to the moment the track opened. Since is was such a hot day my wife and I decided to stay away from the beaches and do some shopping so we headed to" LYNNJAMES CLOTHING" on Dow lane. If you head north on Route one from Hampton Right after you pass "Abercrombie and Finch Restaurant" you'll see Dow lane it just bears off to the right. Pull right in because it's right there on the corner. We were greeted by by the owner and her poodle. This is a super little shop, my wife loved it! They have mens's and women's famous label clothing at very affordable prices! Try "Water Country U.S.A." Voted one of the 10 best water parks in the country it's sure to keep the family busy for the day. They have added new attractions this year and the old stanbys are still there. The giant slides and wave pools and of course the lazy river. The park is exceptionally well supervised and you'll find plenty to eat. Just head straight up route one from Hampton center it's about six miles up on the left. Plenty of parking!

Harley Day at O'leary's Grille in Hampton was a big success. They road to raise money for Joe Poulin who is wheelchair bound after an accident. Some friends and I stopped in about 8:30 and the place was jumping. We had a cocktail and bought some raffle tickets. I won a certificate for $110.00 for silver jewelry. Fisherman's Coop

Just behind Prescott Park on the Pierce Island side you will find the Fisherman's coop. This is where the area commercial fisherman sell and unload their catch of the day. This is run by the State. It is an interesting place to see. Just to the right of this photo looking straight across the river you'll see the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard which has dominated the news lately due to the threat by the Navy to close this important facilitly.

Many people have asked me what that purple flower is that you see in fields and while on the highway so this is what it is. Lupine.

Lupines are attractive plants bearing Pea like flowers in whorls upon long, graceful spikes. There are annual and perennial species. The annual varieties are mainly derived from the following species: Lupinus luteus, the European Yellow Lupine, in which the flowers are yellow, and the stems hairy; L. hirsutus, the European Blue Lupine, a blue-flowered sort, very hairy; L. hartwegi, a two-colored species with blue and red, or blue and white flowers, and many other species differing in color and height. The Lupines bloom during the Summer, and grow 2 to 3 feet tall. The leaves are seven- to nine-parted, and are a handsome feature of the plants, the perennials have more than nine leaflets.

Well not a bad weekend for the beach after all. I saw on the news that some of the merchants are crying that business is off but it doesn't look it to me everytime I try to get anywhere near the beach. They always complain. It's hard to feel sorry for these guys that work 13 weeks a year and then go back down south.

Exeter Bandstand

Welcome to Exeter, the colonial capital of the state of New Hampshire.

SALEM MA FROM HAMPTON NH

Pirates museum

If you have traveled a long distance to get to Hampton Beach You probably would like to see more of the area so here is another suggestion. Salem Ma, Salem is rich in history and home of the famous witch trials. You'll find plenty to see and do. The photo above is from the pirates museum. Museums are everywhere in Salem. You can tour the witch house. Visit the House of Seven Gables the home of Nathaniel Hawthorne and many more. Restaurants are plentiful and for the most part you can walk. There is trolley service around town as well. Recently a statue of Elizabeth Montgomery from Bewitched was put up which caused a little unrest among the witch haters. It takes about 45 minutes to get to Salem from here. You can head down route one or 95. I suggest route one but check with map quest for detailed directions.

Once again another nice day weather wise for the beach so enjoy it!

This was definately the week to pick for your vacation the weather is cooperateing nicely. The rip tides continue to be a problem at Hampton Beach. Yesterday the lifeguards were busy closing different sections of the beach due to the problem.

Once again today the weather will be perfect with no thunderstorms in sight for this afternoon! temps will be in the 70's.

ULTRALIGHT FLY-IN GREENLAND NH

I was riding my bike up Post Road yesterday and realized the the Fly-IN at Sanderson field was taking place this week. This is must see for the whole family. Ultrlight entusiast fly in from all over to spend the week camping out and flying their planes. I think they charge a dollar for parking and they do have hamburgers and hotdogs. In the evening they have a candy drop for the kids. You'll see every kind of Ultralight aircraft there is. To get there just head north on route one. As soon as you go over the North Hampton Bridge take a left. That's Post Road. Just keep going on Post Road maybe 5 or 6 miles you can't miss it.

I was just given a gift certificate to Ronjillians restaurant in Hampton by two wonderlfull woman. I could not have received a better present. I have written about this place before and actually hate to tell people about it because it gets too busy. However just try it! Then you'll know that the things I mention on this website are worth seeing or doing.

Well it's Sunday! What to do? First for you really hungry people how about the breakfast buffet at the Old Salt restaurant in downtown Hampton. It starts at 10 am and runs until 2pm.

Then head up the beach road and maybe Portsmouth for a late lunch at the Rusty Hammer.

Another weekend is here! Another chance to enjoy Hampton and discover the little hide-away things. For example the Union Chapel in North Hampton on Willow Ave. It's right across the street from the fuller Gardens. I believe it's still available to rent for small weddings. It holds about 50 people or less.

Back to the beach! It's going to be a cool one today check out the latest weather to the right a qwikcast. Sunday right through next week looks good so if this is the week you picked for vacation you've done well. I have Sunday-Tuesday off and I'm more than ready to get out and enjoy all that the Seacoast has to offer.
