PORTSMOUTH

Just fifteen minutes north on route one will bring you to Portsmouth NH. Portsmouth was one of the most important shipping ports in the country back in the 1700's. They exported great white pines mostly. This superior wood was sought all over the world. It's size and strength made it perfect for using as the masts in tall ships.
In exchange we received sugar and rum from the West Indies. This may sound odd however after a long winter with just maple syrup the settlers craved real sugar.
Once you get to downtown Portsmouth park, your car and walk. Portsmouth is now known for it's selection of great restaurants. Well over 100 and almost all within walking distance of each other. Most of these restaurants have bars and entertainment. I really can not tell you which one is the best just try them all! Be careful with the beverages make sure you have a designated driver. NH has a tough new drunk driving law. It's now a felony! Besides restaurants there are plenty of activities. Visit Strawberry Banke down by Prescott Park. You can tour all the historic buildings and listen to the story tellers dressed in period costumes. In the summer you'll find music and plays in Prescott park on the banks of the Piscataqua River. The Music Hall is located here as well as live theatre and museums. If you love historic homes Portsmouth is the place to marvel at the sophistication and elegance ot the federalist style homes and the quaintness of the early capes. Annual events include Market Square Day, The Jazz Festival and much more.
