SALISBURY BEACH
When the kids get tired of the arcade action at Hampton beach and need more than just fun in the sun it's time to head south to Salisbury Beach! Head south on route 1A about five miles and your there. Plenty of parking, more than enough junk food and amusement rides. This is not Six Flags by a long shot but should be enough to keep them busy for a few hours. Now you can get the real "Beach Pizza" Tripoli's and Cristy's Pizza are right next to each other. They both have the exact same thin crust, watery sauce square pizza for exactly the same price. However the battle lines are drawn! Are you a Cristy's or a Tripoli's lover. I happen to be a Tripoli's freak. Many arguments have been caused by this subject.
Salisbury Beach has changed significantly over the years. It had a major face lift about 15 years ago. Prior to that it was always quite seedy and still can be a bit on the rough side after 10 pm.
Salisbury Beach reservation is a great escape. They do charge admission. Camping is also available with plenty of room for a tent or RV. Take some time and walk the boardwalks built over the sand to protect the doons.
One other note on Salisbury, The beaches drop of rather quickly. Watch the undertow it really is severe. Stay close to the lifeguards.

Exeter NH is only ten minutes to the west Of Hampton. Exeter was the Capital of New Hampshire during the Revolutionary War. There are many small shops in downtown Exeter. Parking is limited but you'll find a place. The Loaf and ladle restaurant is right downtown which makes it a perfect spot for lunch. Home made soups, breads and sandwiches are the mainstay of this popular eatery.Exeter is the home of Phillps Exeter Academy. their sprawling campus makes up most of the real estate surrounding the downtown area. Many famous people have attended Phillips. Most recently the Olsen twins attended the academy before heading off to collage in New York. You can enjoy a long walk down to the river area which is a park that winds along the banks of the quiet river. Great place to eat a sandwich, lie in the sun or read a book. The Exeter Inn is also a must see. The rooms are elegant and the restaurant is pricey but many people enjoy this area landmark. There are several inns in the downtown area if you'd like to spend a night or two.One more thing. The Ioka Theatre. A real old fashioned movie theatre with the big seats and one screen! MARRELLI'S MARKET
When I was growing up there was a local Variety store for every neighborhood. You know the ones that were owned by one family and all the family members worked there. Some still exsist but for the most part they have been replaced by chain stores. Well there is one store in Hampton that brings back those memories. Marrelli's in downtown Hampton. When your visiting and need that loaf of bread or bottle of wine stop in here. They have fresh roasted peanuts and cashews. Penny candy and all the stuff we use to love as kids. They also have a wine selection in the back of the store that rivals the state liqour store.

WHAT ABOUT CRIME?
I just received an e-mail asking about crime at Hampton Beach. The crime rate for the entire area is generally quite low year round. However Hampton Beach because of the nature of what it is can be higher. Anytime you have a up to 250,000 people in a small area like that your going to have some problems. Mostly do to drinking or drug use and the usual trouble makers. Having said that state and local police are everywhere! On foot, bicycle, horseback and in cars. They do an excellent job without interfering with the fun. However they can't be everywhere. I have never had a problem but I know plenty of people who have. So why haven't I? I stay off the side streets except the ones from the Ashworth Hotel up to the end of the Casino. These areas are well lit and heavily patrolled. I lock my car when I'm at the beach. And the usual common sense type things. You Know, don't flash money, keep your wallet in your front pocket and just plain be aware of your surroundings. In general don't worry about it, have fun!!
PORTSMOUTH
Just fifteen minutes north on route one will bring you to Portsmouth NH. Portsmouth was one of the most important shipping ports in the country back in the 1700's. They exported great white pines mostly. This superior wood was sought all over the world. It's size and strength made it perfect for using as the masts in tall ships.
In exchange we received sugar and rum from the West Indies. This may sound odd however after a long winter with just maple syrup the settlers craved real sugar.
Once you get to downtown Portsmouth park, your car and walk. Portsmouth is now known for it's selection of great restaurants. Well over 100 and almost all within walking distance of each other. Most of these restaurants have bars and entertainment. I really can not tell you which one is the best just try them all! Be careful with the beverages make sure you have a designated driver. NH has a tough new drunk driving law. It's now a felony! Besides restaurants there are plenty of activities. Visit Strawberry Banke down by Prescott Park. You can tour all the historic buildings and listen to the story tellers dressed in period costumes. In the summer you'll find music and plays in Prescott park on the banks of the Piscataqua River. The Music Hall is located here as well as live theatre and museums. If you love historic homes Portsmouth is the place to marvel at the sophistication and elegance ot the federalist style homes and the quaintness of the early capes. Annual events include Market Square Day, The Jazz Festival and much more.
