MARKET SQUARE DAY

Portsmouths' summer kick off has to be Market Square Day. This tradition began in May of 1979 when a group of ambitious people decided that a full blown celebration was in order. I'll never forget the first one. No one really knew what to expect. What they got was overwhelming! tens of thousands of people streaming into the downtown area to hear the music, indulge in all types of street vender food and just party all day. From there it has grown over the years to one of the Seacoast largest two day events. It now encompasses all of downtown from Market Square to the water front. Do to the frequent rain in the month of May the festival was moved to June. For the exact date of this years event check out the Portsmouth Chamber web site. If you plan on attending wear comfortable shoes because you may have to walk quite a distance from your car and then you'll have to walk all around Portsmouth as well!
